Description
I began by visualizing my house as a procession of overlapping events and zones. The juxtaposition of events within this procession along with variations in tempo, scale, light and volume, establish a dynamic, intriguing living experience. Small, compressive volumes indicate intimacy as well as transitional zones while larger volumes denote publicity. The site as it is lies disconnected from the social urban realm on top of a steep hill. In using the program and built form of the house I tried to mitigate this disjuncture by establishing a series of diminishing public zones that led the user gradually through the house. By sliding the garage into the hill, a rooftop terrace brings the users out into the public realm. A series of steps and terraces mediates the space between the street level and the living level. The living level ascends to the kitchen and dining zone before descending into a partially sunken living zone and culminating in an intimate exterior terrace.

  • The site for this house rests on top of a steep hill, disconnecting the lot from the social realm of the street. This is used to create both extremely public and private spaces and experiences while allowing for a partially sunken garage and a secure entrance into the house. A series of steps and terraces ascend to the main living level which houses the kitchen and dining area before descending into the living area and home office and culminating in an intimate exterior terrace. The second floor features two bedrooms, one full bath and a broad balcony off of the master bedroom.
