The “deck house” presents a system of materials and construction techniques that address the needs of the future owner, while satisfying the cost conscious developer. This is achieved through the use of limited finish pallets and a simple, straight-lined structure. Stucco, wood, and recycled metals as the exterior and interior finishes limit the number of trades, creating a more efficient and timely construction process. This approach is also seen in the linear nature of the planes, two basic rectangles that allow for the ease of layout, from footing through finish work. This sensitivity carries through to the narrow rectangular site. Conscious of the proximity of the homes to either side of the residence, a collection of screen systems provide light to the middle of the home, while creating a sense of interior privacy and breaking up the flat plane of the exterior.
