A história começa no verão de 1996 quando transitava do 4º para o 5º ano do curso de arquitectura e me foi proposto um desafio, após criticas a um “projecto de engenheiro”. o tempo passou devagar, um processo penoso…: toda a ingenuidade que nos é permitida na escola, não se perdoa no mundo da construção. culpas repartidas pelas diferentes pessoas que tomaram a iniciativa, que o desenvolveram e que o construíram e que muito fizeram para que a realidade fosse outra... à excepção de uma, ou outra pessoa.
a todos agradeço sem excepção a oportunidade desta experiência que é, para bem e para o mal, testemunho do seu empenho.
neste momento a obra está habitada, mas incompleta à espera da fundamental protecção solar projectada para os vãos da estrutura de ferro.
o pedido consistia na ampliação da casa que se tornava diminuta para uma família em crescimento em número e desejos. a ampliação previa um novo quarto para o casal e quarto de banho, um grande espaço social que albergasse o estar e jantar, uma piscina exterior, uma garagem com arrumos, e uma “cozinha regional” com uma ligação forte ao jardim.
a habitação existente situava-se num só lote de gaveto da urbanização, tendo o proprietário adquirido mais três lotes contíguos (21, 20 e 19), orientados no sentido norte-sul, com intenção de edificar apenas sobre o lote que lhe é adjacente. a casa é protegida a norte e nascente por um vasto maciço arbóreo que lhe atribui algum recolhimento, podendo abrir-se a sul no sentido da paisagem minhota.
o modelo pré existente correspondia a uma solução corrente dos anos oitenta. a morfologia da casa não contribuía no sentido do enriquecimento do espaço interior, mas sim no tratamento do espaço exterior e na criação de um cenário de jardim devassado pela rua.
da análise feita de todos os constrangimentos do programa sobre o terreno, nomeadamente arquitectónicos e paisagísticos, a proposta assume duas vertentes: uma integradora, das pré existências e de reconciliação com o património regional; outra de ruptura de linguagem. a ampliação da habitação sujeitou-se à mancha de ocupação do lote adjacente à construção, prevista no plano de loteamento. o novo espaço com uma implantação de 6 por 15 metros, incorpora em si, no rés-do-chão, a norte, a sala de jantar com ligação à cozinha existente e a sala de estar dividida da anterior por um corpo suspenso que integra a lareira. todo este espaço é conformado por um volume permeável ao sol de pé direito duplo que pontualmente (sobre a sala de jantar e a sul junto ao espelho de água) é ferido ao nível do segundo piso, pelas lajes do quarto do casal e da sala de jogos. a caixa de escadas, da antiga casa, assume-se como o principal elo entra as duas intervenções e dá acesso quarto novo do casal. para a sala de bilhar foi necessário desenhar umas novas escadas autónomas da zona de quartos.
ampliação desenvolve-se nas costas da casa actual, sobre uma empena cega marcada pela incontornável presença dos telhados, optou-se continuidade do telhado maior - alias não podia evita-lo, era uma exigência do cliente!…
a casa, bem como os anexos, é elevada sobre um sistema estrutural aparente em vigas e pilares heb (forte! capaz apoiar uma torre de 30 andares!...) de aço galvanizado e pintado. os pavimentos interiores elevados são lajes de betão aligeiradas com revestimentos em soalho ou pedra.
a nova habitação traz consigo o espaço de reunião em família e expande-o para o centro do logradouro. o espaço exterior adquire a forma de pátio, definido pela colocação da piscina perpendicular à casa, pela envolvência das árvores de fruto a poente e pela protecção dos anexos a norte. estes são constituídos pelas garagens, pelas salas de arrumos e a casa do cão salientes para obter maior intimidade na “cozinha regional”, que lhes é contígua, e pela casa da lenha. o conjunto é protegido da rua e do lote vizinho em todo o perímetro por árvores de pequeno porte (laranjeiras e oliveiras). o espaço exterior é assim uma grande e solarenga eira minhota com lajes de granito entremeadas por espaço de relva e jardim, contemplada pela esplanada frente à “cozinha regional.

 The story begins in the summer of 1996 when i switched from the 4th to the 5th year in architecture. i was offered a challenge, after criticism a “engineer project”. time passed slowly, it was a painful process… all the ingenuity that is allowed in school, does not forgive the world of construction. the blame shared by different people who took the initiative, which developed it, who built it and who did much to of that reality different… except for one or another person.
I thank everyone without exception the opportunity for this experience that was, for good or bad one testimony of the commitment of them.
the work is currently inhabited, but incomplete awaiting the fundamental sunscreen designed for the spans in the iron structure.
the request was to enlarge the house that became small for a family that was increasing in number and in desires. the expansion provided a new room for the couple with a bathroom, a large social space that had a living and dining room, an outdoor pool, a garage with storage and a “regional cuisine” with a strong connection to the garden.
the existing house was located on a single lot in the corner of a urbanization, the owner had purchased three contiguous lost (21, 20 and 19), oriented north to south., with the intention to build only on the lot adjacent to it. the house is protected to the north and east by a vast massif tree that gives it a pickup, and it opens to the south for a minho´s countryside.
the pre-existing model corresponded to a current solution in the eighties. the morphology of the home did not contribute towards the enrichment of interior space, but the treatment of outer space and on the creation of a garden setting pierced by the street.
from analysis of all the constraints of the program on the ground, including architectural and landscaping, the proposal assumes two components: one integrator, the pre existences and reconciliation with the regional heritage, and other on the breaking of his language. the expansion of housing was subjected to the stain of occupation of the lot adjacent to the building, provide in the plan of subdivision. the new space with a deployment of 6 for 15 m, incorporates itself on the ground-floor,north, the dining room connecting to the existing kitchen and living room divided from the first by a body that includes the suspended fireplace. all this space formed by a volume permeable to the sun with double heigh that occasionally (on the dining room and south along the water surface) is injured at the second floor by the slabs of the couple´s new bedroom and the playroom. the housing ladder on the old house, is assumed as the main link between the two interventions and leads to the new bedroom. for the playroom, it was necessary to design a new ladder autonomous of the zone rooms.
on the expansion developed on the back of the house, on a blind gable marked bt the unavoidable presence of roofs, it was decided to continue the larger roof – i could not avoid, it was a requirement of the customer!
the house, as well as the attachements, is elevated by a system of structural beams and columns in heb (strong! able to support a 30 story tower!) galvanized steel and painted. the interior floors are elevated in a concrete slab with relaxed coverings, parquet or stone..
the new house brings to the family a meeting space and expands it to the center of the street. the outdoor space takes the form of a courtyard, defined by the placement of fruit trees to the west that protect the annexes to the north. attachments are formed by the garages, storage rooms and the dog house that are salient for greater intimacy on the “regional cuisine”, witch is contiguous to them, and by the woodshed. the assembly is protected from the street and the lot next door around the perimeter of small trees (orange and olive trees). outer space is just a great, sunny floor with granite slabs interspersed with lawn and the garden space, covered front terrace to the “regional cuisine”.
