Bartholomew County Veterans Memorial, Columbus, IN USA
- Bartholomew County Veterans Memorial
Columbus, Indiana - Charles Rose Architects’competition-winning design honors the soldiers from Bartholomew Countywho died in 20 th-century wars. From a distance the memorial, withits rough, rock-cut limestone exterior, appears as a single powerful block. Upclose, visitors are drawn into its thicket of 25 columns, which creates a havenfor meditation and reflection. Etched on the smooth column surfaces within arethe names, letters and diary entries of the more than 150 veterans that thememorial honors. The narrow passageways and upward movement of the columnsguide the visitor’s eye to the sky. At night, lights embedded in the memorial’sbase create a dramatic play of light and shadow and illuminate the columns’ innersurfaces. Indianalimestone is the primary building material. The memorial has been published in Landscape Architecture, Architectural Record and Architecture magazines and has won theBuilding Stone Institute’s Tucker Award of Excellence and BostonSociety of Architects Unbuilt Architecture Design Award.
