(Fall, 2009) In collaboration with Radha Mistry - This project investigates the design of a large scale program in the small scale context of New Orleans French Quarter. The square footages of the original program types (recreation, entertainment, retail, restaurants, and lodging) were compared with the average sizes of equivalent programs in the surrounding context. The original program was then divided into discrete buildings to be comparable to the scale of the surrounding context.

CONTEXT MASS-VOID DIAGRAM
NewOrleans blocks have a high percentage of open space versus built space. This project set out to create a porous block with a minimum of 34%open space (based on the average percentage of the surrounding blocks.)
CONTEXT AVERAGE PROGRAM SIZES
The square footages of the original program types (recreation, entertainment, retail, restaurants, and lodging) were compared with the average sizes of equivalent programs in the surrounding context. The original program was then divided into discrete buildings to be comparable to the scale of the surrounding context.
FORMAL STRATEGY DIAGRAM
The private and public program types take different massing forms. The public programs are cones within the orthogonal skin, while the private programs are orthogonal forms with a conical atrium.
